We are a small team of just three people, two of us being the owners.
Johl (owner and chef) has always loved Mexican cuisine, so he began teaching himself how to cook over the past few of years. He is completely self-taught and neither of us have worked in the food industry before!
Back when we started in the beginning of 2022, nowhere in Victoria was making Birria Tacos; so Johl spent months perfecting the recipe and wanted to give a restaurant a try. We decided on the name "Benjo's Tacos" to name it after our son Benjamin.
We started out in a little make-shift kitchen in a convenience store, working on two electric griddles and a stove you'd have in your home kitchen! We had no idea what we were doing. It was just the two of us, and once word got out about our tacos, we'd have a lineup out the door every single day. It was so surreal seeing how many people loved Johls cooking!
In December of 2022, we had a fire in our building causing us to shut down over the holidays and into the new year. We were unsure what the future meant for us and if we would be able to continue. This is when the owner of Empire Donuts reached out to us and offered a space in her bakery. We graciously accepted and we were so excited to finally cook in a proper kitchen!
We have absolutely loved working alongside Empire, and our new location in Cook Street Village. We have been able to expand our menu since then and have a bunch of outdoor seating now as well.
So, what does the future hold for Benjo's? Well we hope someday to have a restaurant of our own; offering lunch, dinner and margaritas. Until then you'll have to come visit us for lunch in Cook Street. We plan to take things slow to ensure our quality and customer service are never compromised! We hope to see you soon.
We proudly make everything on our menu from scratch. Absolutely nothing comes frozen or pre-made. Each batch of meat is cooked for hours in the morning, and each sauce is made fresh daily. Our entire menu is gluten-free and celiac safe. All of our meats and salsas are oil free. We make all of our hot sauces and salsas with no preservatives and fresh local produce!
We use the best quality meats and produce found locally.
This ensures we can support other small businesses and the local economy.
We get our meat from Berryman Farms. They produce local beef, pork and chicken with no added hormones or antibiotics and delivered fresh every week.
Our tortillas are made by the amazing people at Adriana's the Whole Enchilada in Saanichton, and in our opinion are the best tortillas we've ever had!
These are made with white corn and are preservative-free.
Lastly, we get all of our produce from the Root Cellar. This is a local grocery store that has great values and donates a lot of food to local charities.
